Unlocking Homeownership in Florida: Affordable Solutions for Local Workers

The Hometown Heroes Program was implemented in 2023 by Governor Ron DeSantis to help Florida frontline workers afford the cost of buying a home. The program is available for members of over 100 lines of work including law enforcement officers, first responders, veterans, nurses, and other hometown heroes.

The program is making the dream of homeownership affordable for members of the community workforce by providing down payment and closing cost assistance to first-time, income-qualified individuals so they are able to purchase a primary residence in the community in which they work and serve. 

Features:

• Those who earn less than 150% of their county’s area median income (AMI) can qualify
• Closing cost and down payment assistance – borrowers can receive up to 5% of their first mortgage loan amount (up to $35,000) in down payment and closing cost assistance*
• Receive lower than market interest rates on an FHA, VA, RD, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac first mortgage
• Reduced upfront fees
• No origination points
• Minimum FICO score of 640 to qualify

*Down payment and closing cost assistance is available in the form of a 0*, non-amortizing, 30-year deferred second mortgage. As part of the agreement, this second mortgage becomes due and payable in full upon the refinancing of the first mortgage, sale of the property, transfer of deed, or if the homeowner no longer occupies the property as a primary residence. Florida Hometown Heroes loans are not forgivable.
